Location
Chiang Mai, 761 kms. by rail, approximately 700
kms. by road north of Bangkok, with an area of
20,107.1 sq.lms., is Thailand's second largest
city and capital of the northern region. ChiangMai
is administratively divided into 22 Amphurs districts)
Situated between north latitude 17-21 and east
longitude 98-99, the province of Chiang Mai is
found in the upper area of Thailand's northern
region. Climate
The climate of Chiang Mai and all of Northern
Thailand, is slightly different from the climate
of central and southern Thailand. The cool season
lasts from late October to the end of February.
Average daytime temperature is 21 degrees and
the nights cooler still. The coolest months are
December and January.
The hot season is from early March to end of May.
With average daytime temperatures around 30 degrees.
The hottest month is April. The rainy season usually
begins early June and reaches to the end of October.
Average temperature is 25 degrees and the wettest
month is September. History
Chiang Mai owes her existence to the Ping River
which provided the route along which trade could
be extended beyond the wall of mountains that
surround the valley in which the city is located.
It became a channel for trade from China and Burma
to the Gulf of Siam. The wide, fertile valley,
able to support a large number of people, became
the basis of political power in the feudal kingdom
of Lanna
(Chiang Mai). |
